Global Energy Giant Uses 3D Technology by Control Room Solutions to Gain Edge in Oil Exploration.

With oil and gas deposits becoming increasingly difficult to find, let alone extract, any new tool or technique that makes the process easier can be considered a win for the industry. Australian company Critical Room Solutions, which has been designing and deploying leading-edge 3D and 2D visualisation systems for just over two decades, was recently able to help one of its clients, a major international oil and gas company, significantly enhance its exploration and drilling planning processes with the installation of not just one, but three such systems.

Incorporating 3D projectors and ultra-fast graphics processors, along with the latest video conferencing gear, the system helps the company analyse and map well structures with drastically improved speed and accuracy, resulting in weeks, if not months, potentially being shaved off exploration and well design schedules.

Initially engaged for a technical review of the company’s existing infrastructure, CRS were able to identify a number of opportunities and make key recommendations. They then went on to design and install a new solution that aligned closely with their client’s business needs, while utilising some of the very latest 3D visualisation and real-time collaboration technologies.

Deployed across three sites in the company’s Perth offices, the system includes dual active stereo 3D projectors from ProjectionDesign, and dual-link matrix switchers and extenders from Black Diamond for synchronisation of video source and display. Video processing is handled by NVIDIA Quadro 5000 CPUs, and AMX wireless touch panels allow stakeholders to manipulate and explore projected 3D images representing well structure and geology. One site employs dual rear 3D projection, another dual front projection, and the third, single front projection. Industry leader Stewart supplied the screens, and Euromet Arakno the high-precision projector mounts.

CRS’s solution also incorporated Cisco videoconferencing equipment. Said CRS General Manager Lena Kimenkowski, “This was a critical piece of the puzzle, as it gives our client the ability to collaborate and discuss business objectives in real time, both nationally and globally.
